For those who like to throw chocolate at a dessert from every possible direction (chocolate! chocolate filling! chocolate frosting! chocolate ganache! chocolate sprinkles! chocolate curls! and some chocolate on the side!) this is not your cake, unless you choose to dress it up a little.
BUT, those of you who like chocolate in moderation, you can't go wrong with this cake. The batter is very thin once you add the hot water; I baked it for the maximum recommended time and it came out fabulously. The chocolate flavor is not powerful, but delicate and subdued - it's the texture that I really like about this one, though. It is very resilient, springy, but moist, tender and smooth to the taste, without being dense. It slices very cleanly and has little to no crumble. This cake was lovely at our weekly teatime. It is not only tasty on its own, but also welcomes the addition of a ganache or other side/topping - we served ours with unsweetened whipped cream and strawberries, sprinkled with mini chocolate chips.
This is a delicious, moist cake with terrific texture. Doesn't need any frosting at all as it has such good flavor on its own. Indeed, frosting would ruin it.
Delicious, easy and satisfying!
This is an absolutely outstanding recipe. Its very easy to put together and it tastes wonderful. I simply followed the recipe and wound up with one of the best cakes I've even made.
Excellent! Moist that melts in your mouth. Not too sweet w/just powdered sugar over it. Makes me think of a molten chocolate lava cake w/o the running center. I'll make this cake several more times.
Where is the recipe?
I tried this recipe last Christmas along with the Chocolate Ganache and have made it a few times since. Very easy recipe to follow. I did use only half of the suggested powdered sugar - just seemed like too much 'sweet' - it was still very rich. I don't do a lot of baking and not a big cake fan, but tried this one for my family and everyone really liked it. Stays moist and I like the simple eloquence of the Chocolate Ganache over top.
Lovely, lovely, lovely! Outstanding texture and taste, and it is so tender. I am an experienced baker, and have made my share of chocolate cakes. This recipe is top notch, and will be a staple in my baking. Next time, I may add some cocoa powder to the hot water at the end to kick up the chocolate experience a notch!
Even though the cake tasted good, the powdered sugar didn't add anything to it. It was just added blah. I will try the other additions for the batter recipe though, because that part tasted good. I don't think I am using the powdered sugar again, but the batter is a keeper recipe.
Though it takes a little more time to put it together, it's the best cake I've ever eaten. Very moist. I've made it twice now and plan to to so again. I used the Chocolate Ganash for the topping. There were 11 other cake options for this batter. I chose this one for it's simpleness. I plan to try one of the other cakes next time.
